Through teamwork and individual perseverance, the finish line will be crossed

After successful completion of the half marathon in Paris earlier this year, employees of Factory-CRO were full of enthusiasm to participate in one of the newly presented events: the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman run (September 4th) and one of the world major marathons, NEW YORK! (November 6th)

The Fisherman’s Friend Strongman run is a mud challenge run of 21 kilometers with no less than 41 obstacles. After a thorough preparation by completing an individual training program, in combination with collective whole body workouts, 4 colleagues challenged all obstacles and finished within 3.5 hours. A master piece of teamwork! The heroic stories afterwards made clear that it had been a real perseverance test that challenged the individuals as well as the team to make it to the finish line. However, this challenge was exactly what they hoped for when they registered themselves as Strongman and Strongwomen.

While the Strongman run finishers are already looking back on a tremendous performance, the training for the other major running event has almost reached its peak in intensity.

Although the New York marathon may sound scary, surely it could also motivate or persuade you to run a marathon. As of April 2016, a delegation of 9 runners, both with and without marathon experience decided to take this challenge and started training. Some to improve their personal best, some to get the experience of a marathon and some to see New York again. Everyone is training on their own level, with their own goal and on their own intensity, but with one common goal: reaching the finish line in Central Park.

With a background in handball, a sport mainly depending on short interval running, it was hard to convince me to accept the totally opposite challenge of running a marathon. In April, I got my first training schedule including 4 types of training: an endurance run, a fast run, an interval training and a long and slow long distance run. I started training and while the months passed, I noticed self-improvement; distances and training duration increased while kilometer times decreased. During several running events that I joined, this self-improvement was confirmed by finish times. Moreover, obtaining personal bests keeps me motivated in the preparation for the marathon. However, the preparation is not always fun and has sometimes its downsides. For example, when you have to train when you already tired after work, when you have to deal with muscle soreness and when it takes a lot of your leisure time, especially when the length of training times increases.

There are 5 weeks left to the marathon and the countdown has started. Specially for this event, unique Factory-CRO outfits have been designed and each participant has yet chosen his/her race outfit. The excitement grows and experiences on how to prepare best are shared. But the main question for everyone is: how will I perform on the big day?

I am looking forward to my first marathon experience and to seeing the results of my colleagues!

Factory Team
Teamwork, long-term goals, personalized training programs, striving for the best and self-development are common characteristics for employees of Factory-CRO. Characteristics that are not only very useful during work at the office, but certainly also when training for an endurance event.
